Should Elders Make a Decision Before Meeting with Men of the Church?

Question

Your thoughts please on elders taking every decision (financial) made before the men of the congregation before it’s actually made.
I know and understand this isn’t being realistic. however; when you have one or two that wants everything brought before the men of the congregation before a decision is made and at the same time refuses to take leadership roles, It tends to creat problems with these individuals. While I am new as an elder, I worry greatly that I will make mistakes that will disappoint or be against Gods will. I pray daily for Gods guidance, grace, and forgiveness. Please help me to have a better understanding. I know what an elders job is but I am struggling with my own fears of doing something wrong. Thank you!

John Doe,

My Thoughts

You present some good questions.

  1. Why does the eldership bring it before the men of the congregation?
    1. Is it to listen to their thoughts and gather their ideas? That could be wise because they might have some ideas that the elders hadn’t considered.
    2. Is it to let them decide for the elders? If this is the reason, then the elders are not the leaders. They are just the vote counters. A five-year-old could do that.
  2. You say that one or two want everything brought before the men. What are your rules for making decisions? Do you make decisions by majority rule or minority rule? https://www.newshepherdsorientation.com/do-your-elders-practice-majority-or-minority-rule/
  3. Is it the same one or two every time? Do you have a “head elder” that others are afraid to disagree with?
  4. I don’t understand why men who are elders wouldn’t take leadership roles.
  5. Observation: You may have some dysfunction in your group that may take time and teaching to overcome.
  6. As long as you are concerned, are dedicated to your growth and development, and ask questions that can help the group grow, I think you are doing God’s will. Many problems started many years ago. They may not be solved quickly.
  7. Two suggestions — here are agreements that can be helpful:

  • During my service as an elder we took only a few questions to the congregation. The vote was split down the middle every time. One we voted on evening worship time between 4:00 and 5:00. It was split and we chose 4:30.

  • Jerrie, you have provided excellent answers. I will add one more, still in the context of the elders remaining in control of the outcome.
Great ideas are aplenty, but the number of people required to execute the decisions reached is fewer. Those who express an interest in offering an opinion on a matter are target #1 to help implement a part or whole of the solution. You will either discover a hidden gem of a servant in the congregation, or just a person with a lot of opinions. Over time, these types of “open meetings” will evolve into working sessions focused on getting things done.
